There's something endlessly cool about controlling a swarm of little critters while you stand back in the cheering section and watch them work their little legs off to serve your seemingly senseless mental meanderings.
But what I don't know, can't figure out, is if I loved the game before I saw the Nintendo Hot Dog commercial ' probably the best Nintendo commercial ever. I guess it doesn't really matter, what does matter is that you go out right now and buy Pikmin 2. It's a fantastic sequel to the original game adding the ability to play coop or adversarial multiplayer modes.
In the sequel you take on the roll of Captain Olimar as he tries to scavenge enough scrap to get his boss's company out of debt. This time around you can also control Louie, Olimar's dim sidekick. To collect the junk you'll have to control an army of tiny little pikmin. Fortunately, controlling them is very intuitive and more than half the fun of the game.
The game doesn't just a new controllable character to the play, it also adds a few new shades of pikmin, the diminutive creatures that carry out Olimar's bidding. The game's collection of pikmin are color-coded with each shade having it's own special abilities. The new poisonous white pikmin are themselves resistant to poison and can find treasure while the new purple pikmin are ten times stronger than their counter-parts.
The game also has new cave areas to explore and an unlimited time period for spelunking. The original game had a 30 day time limit. The change that most makes this game a keeper is the addition of several new modes.
There's a two-player battle mode, split-screen mode and a two-player challenge mode. Pikmin 2 is the type of strange, oddly addictive game that keeps Nintendo fans happy and draws new followers to the brand daily. The game blends the best aspects of puzzle games with a twist of action and adventure, leaving gamers with a constant desire to play and control.
Two thimble-tall alien astronauts are better than one, or so goes the theory behind this sequel. Aside from two-player play, it tosses in new photosynthesis-fueled critters--a burly purple fella and a creepy, poisonous white one. Pikmin 2 centers on quests for doodads, which isn't much different from the goal of the first game. So far, it just feels like more of the same. But man, that white thing scares me. The game is great and i had a lot of fun with it so far, but…what prevents me from giving it five stars is the bug i encountered.
Curious, i went to the level screen where i was given an overview of the level system and told i needed total steps to do so. I had about at that point. It stayed stuck at 0. Not even restarting the app or my phone worked. Though, if you want a relaxing game to have on in the background while you walk around, then by all means get this game.
I just hope another bug patch is implemented to fix whatever sequence break i happened to glitch the game out with. Enough ranting about that, the game itself is why your reading thing? I really enjoy this charming game. Being that Pickmin have no inherent CP rating, pulling and naming Pickmin feels more rewarding, as you will never have to put any of your Pickmin in a candy blender.
You can tackle the quests at your own pace and interact with seedlings and Pickmin at your behest. Additionally, sending your Pickmin on fetch quests and watching them walk toward map locations in real time is quite cute.
However, there is still more from the Pickmin side of things that I would like to see. In this iteration, however, you would throw Pickmin like a Pokeball at the monster to attack. Type resistance could also be used from the main games. In reality, that is one core concept I would like to see. The developer, Niantic, Inc. The following data may be used to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies:.
The following data may be collected and linked to your identity:. Privacy practices may vary, for example, based on the features you use or your age. Learn More. With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app. App Store Preview. Not to fear however as the Pikmin will attack on command and clear the way. If he does incur damage to his space suit, it can be repaired at his ship as long as the suit's not compromised.
Even if Olimar gets overwhelmed, there is an emergency return function that will bring him back, but it will take the rest of the day to recover. To help understand how different parts of the game come together, whenever something is discovered, a brief description about it and how to use it is displayed on the screen as Olimar taking to himself. In addition, after a day is completed, Olimar reviews anything new he discovered and also analyzes his Pikmin stats including how many he has, lost, and left behind.
As far as controlling the numerous Pikmin and Olimar are concerned, most will find little difficulty quickly adapting to the control structure. Most functions like using the control stick to move, the A button to pick or throw a Pikmin, and B button to call Pikmin to attention are performed without issue. Other commands like dismissing and separating the Pikmin using the X button, moving the Pikmin with the C stick, and viewing Olimar's monitor with the Y button are also user friendly and easy to execute.
Even adjusting the camera angle generally where most games have difficulty is straightforward when changing and manipulating it. With the L button rotating the camera, R button zooming, and Z button changing the angle, after some practice most people will find it a simple structure, adjusting the camera angle without trouble.
For the most part, the graphics are on track for next generation systems and shouldn't cause any heartburn. You'll notice the detail in the plants and even the terrain help produce a more realistic world.
In addition to creating interesting environments to explore, you'll also see interaction between Olimar and the environment with leaves rustling when walked through and the water rippling when entered. The water effects in particular stand out as it glistens and moves in a realistic manner. Although some of the detail for the different animals could have been increased, Pikmin are designed to be simple so it fits in with the style of game.
With the game based on these curious Pikmin, the sound tracks also reflects their simple nature. Although some might find it annoying, it's generally pleasing as it's more of a soft and inquisitive melody.
To help keep it from grating on the nerves, each area also has their own sound track that reflects the environment to some degree. The rest of the effects fit the style of the game with different animals creating unique sounds, fitting cleanly with the rest of the game.
Once again, Nintendo has produced an original creation that stretches the boundaries of previous game design. With their ability to generate new worlds and engage them in ways never considered before, Nintendo has continued their tradition of success and justifies their place in the gaming industry. The only real complaint to be found is the game's length, as it must be completed in a specified period of time, thirty of Olimar's days.
